Houston police are investigating after a man was found suffering from gunshot wounds inside a car that crashed outside a home in West Houston.
Surveillance video captured the moment the driver’s truck slammed into a parked vehicle along Briar Terrace Drive late Saturday night.
Homeowner Erika Rivera said the impact woke her and her husband.
“It was just a loud bang that happened. My husband’s the one that heard it,” Rivera said. “And so, we came outside and there was a truck that had hit our car.”
Rivera said at first, they thought the driver might be having a medical emergency and called 911.
“We didn’t even realize that there was gunshots on the glass until we got really kind of close to it,” she said. “We looked, and my husband’s like, he’s been shot.”
Houston firefighters arrived minutes later and pronounced the driver dead at the scene.
Investigators say the homeowners did not recognize the driver or the vehicle involved.
“The homeowners did not recognize the driver or that particular vehicle that hit their car,” said Lt. Ali with HPD. “Officers that responded to the scene knocked on as many doors as they could to gather as much surveillance as they could.”
Rivera said her heart breaks for the victim’s family and wished there was something more she could have done.
“It’s like I asked the paramedics if there was something that could have done, but he said no,” she said.
The impact also left behind debris scattered across lawns including a broken Nissan emblem and destroyed a neighbor’s mailbox and flower bed.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing as they work to determine what led up to the shooting.
