Driver in BMW killed in head-on collision while fleeing police in Baytown

Baytown Police say the driver of a BMW died in a head-on collision with another vehicle after he fled from officers trying to pull him over for reckless driving.

Police say the crash happened in the 6500 block of Highway 146.

According to Baytown PD, officers spotted the BMW driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed on Highway 146 near Alexander Drive around 8 p.m. and attempted to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop and headed north. Officers lost sight of the vehicle several times before it entered Chambers County’s jurisdiction, and the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit.

A short time later, police say the BMW was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle near Crystal Blvd. The man who was driving the BMW was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

A man and woman in the other vehicle were transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say the highway is shut down between Kilgore Pkwy and Devinwood Drive and will be shut down for the next several hours.

Drivers are urged to seek alternate routes.

The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.
