TSA worker facing eviction finds relief after KPRC 2 story sparks community support
When the government shutdown left one Houston TSA employee unable to pay rent, he faced an uncertain future — packing his belongings and preparing to move into a shelter.
When the government shutdown left one Houston TSA employee unable to pay rent, he faced an uncertain future — packing his belongings and preparing to move into a shelter.
But after KPRC 2 shared his story, everything changed.
Thanks to an outpouring of generosity from our viewers, and the support of a local legal aid organization, “Jo” — who asked that we use only his first name for fear of retaliation when he had no legal representation — is no longer facing eviction.
Community Steps Up
Within hours of KPRC 2’s story airing, more than 20 viewers reached out, offering to help Jo avoid homelessness.
“As soon as I heard that he was still showing up for work, I just thought a lot of this gentleman,” said Amy Robinette, one of the first people to offer assistance. “He felt that he needed our help.”
Another viewer, Hal Pontez, said helping Jo was a privilege. “My ability to help somebody who’s actually contributing to society through those relatively public positions is an honor for me, really,” he said.
Legal Aid and a Second Chance
KPRC 2 connected Jo with Lone Star Legal Aid, where attorney Jonna Treble took his case. She immediately began working to stop the eviction and ensure his landlord accepted payment.
“It’s important to understand that even if a landlord accepts a late payment, they can still legally move forward with eviction,” Treble explained. “That’s why we worked to get everything clearly in writing.”
Treble also arranged for payments to go directly to the property management company — ensuring Jo didn’t lose eligibility for free legal support.
“Don’t Give Up Hope”
With his rent covered and eviction dismissed, Jo says he finally feels like he can breathe again.
“It made a big difference because [my attorney] gave me a real strategy to go about it,” Jo said. “Now I can focus back on work and school and just getting back to my normal life.”
He also had a message for other federal employees struggling during the shutdown: “Don’t give up hope. Look for your resources. Reach out to your media if you feel like you have to. You’re not asking for anyone to let you off the hook — just to understand your circumstance.”
