KPRC 2 partners with Houston Food Bank to help families impacted by SNAP cuts. Here’s how you can help
Help feed Houston families impacted by the federal government shutdown
Nearly 878,000 families across the Greater Houston area and surrounding counties will not receive SNAP benefits in November. The United States Department of Agriculture tells us, “the well has run dry.”
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — better known as SNAP — provides monthly benefits to help families afford groceries. That money comes from the USDA and because of the government shutdown continuing, benefits will stop for millions nationwide, including those hundreds of thousands right here locally.
How do we know this? Texas Health and Human Services tells KPRC 2, “SNAP benefits for November won’t be issued if the federal government shutdown continues past Oct. 27.”
Bottom line? Hundreds of thousands of Houston-area households, on top of unpaid federal workers, are facing empty shelves at home.
Here is how you can help:
Starting on Monday, October 27, 2025 KPRC 2 began partnering with community organizations to collect non-perishable food items, benefitting the Houston Food Bank!
All week long, KPRC 2 will visit some of these organizations to collect donations.
On Wednesday, October 29, 2025 we will be at Phoenicia Specialty Foods located on Westheimer. KPRC 2 members will be live, on-site from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Come drop off nonperishable food items or to help families in need. Every item received will directly benefit members of the Greater Houston community.
Or, if you’d rather contribute financially, you can donate here. A $1 donation can provide 3 meals.
Every can, every dollar, every gesture counts. Together, we can make sure no Houston family goes hungry.
