Houston airports struggle with long TSA lines, major delays due to government shutdown

A warning for travelers heading to the airport on Monday: expect long lines and major delays at both George Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports as the government shutdown impacts TSA staffing.

At Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), security wait times could exceed three hours, airport officials confirmed.

Because of the shutdown, TSA agents working without pay are calling out, leaving fewer screening lanes open.

Only TSA checkpoints at Terminals A and E are currently operating.

If you’re flying United Airlines, airport officials say you must check your luggage at Terminal C and then walk or take the Subway to Terminal E for security screening.

At Hobby Airport, TSA wait times are stretching beyond one hour, with limited screening lanes open there as well.

Many travelers told KPRC 2 they’ve been waiting for hours, some missing flights altogether.

“I’ve been waiting two and a half hours. My new flight is at 10, but my initial flight was at 7:05. I was quite upset initially, but I’m trying to stay optimistic. Still, I’m a little pissed off for sure,” said Imani Keelin.

“That’s almost three hours, that’s crazy. There are people outside still waiting. I’m just trying to keep positive vibes to make it through the day,” Leslie Lemon, another passenger, said.

Photos sent to KPRC 2 show TSA lines at Terminal E extending outside the building and down the sidewalk Sunday evening. At 6:15 p.m., new photos showed the same long lines hours later, despite airport efforts to move passengers as quickly as possible.TSA line at Terminal E at 6:15 p.m.

The Houston Airport System said in a statement that it is “doing everything possible to support our TSA partners and keep passengers moving safely and efficiently.”

Officials urge travelers to arrive at least three hours early for international flights and two hours early for domestic departures until the shutdown ends.

Hobby Airport also said TSA lines may exceed 60 minutes.
