Mayor John Whitmire and Solid Waste Management Director Larius Hassen announced Tuesday the addition of 16 new recycling and heavy trash trucks to the city’s fleet — a move aimed at improving on-time pickup and service reliability for residents across Houston.
Tuesday’s unveiling took place at the Solid Waste Management Northeast Service Center on Neches Street, where residents and media got a first look at the new fleet and heard from the mayor, Director Hassen, and frontline drivers about how the vehicles will improve collection services.
The new vehicles include recycling trucks, grapplers for heavy trash, and rear loaders. City officials said the trucks are being placed into service immediately, part of an accelerated rollout to keep up with growing demand and ensure more efficient routes.
According to the city, this delivery is part of Mayor Whitmire’s broader commitment to improving on-time collection and ensuring more reliable, safer, and efficient service for residents.
The delivery also marks the next step in a plan to add 50 new solid waste vehicles by the end of October. The trucks will temporarily keep their factory-white color until final painting and branding are completed — a decision meant to minimize downtime and get them on the streets faster.
