FunPlex & YMCA closures in Alief narrow options for kids and parents

The closure of Funplex, a once-popular family entertainment venue, marks the latest in a series of recreational facility closures affecting Houston’s west side communities, particularly in the Alief area.
The former entertainment center’s grand hall now stands as an empty shell of its former self, despite an active online petition from community members, the facility’s reopening appears unlikely due to profitability concerns.
Impact on community recreation
The closure represents a broader trend affecting family-oriented facilities in west Houston. In May, the Alief Family YMCA also permanently closed its doors, citing financial challenges as a primary factor.
Alternative options emerge
As traditional entertainment venues disappear, some families are turning to free alternatives. The Alief Neighborhood Center has emerged as a popular option, offering:
- Open spaces for physical activity
- Study areas
- An attached library
- Family-friendly environment
“Being able to have places where people don’t shame you... where it’s known for being kid friendly, so we think this is a pretty good option,” one local parent explained.
FunPlex’s financial issues are longstanding
Attorney J. Scott Douglas did a lot of business with FunPlex over the years and offered insight. He said the business was unsustainable with dwindling crowds.
“It’s just an unprofitable operation,” Douglas said.
“You have 56 air conditioners that were in there that had to be on all the time. The water bill. The utilities.”
“Fun plex used to do a lot of birthday parties. They lost out on that business to Chuck E. Cheese that was closer. Other developments also came along to compete like Main Event and Dave & Buster’s, that were closer and had a smaller footprint,” Douglas said.
