Drivers say flashing yellow lights at Highway 242 and Firetower Road causing confusion, over 20 crashes
Neighbors along Highway 242 and Firetower Road in Montgomery County say confusing flashing yellow lights and stop signs are causing frequent crashes. Records obtained by KPRC 2 show at leasr 24 crashes since January 2024.

Drivers say a confusing intersection along Highway 242 and Firetower Road has become a hotspot for crashes, and data obtained by KPRC 2 backs that up.
Since January 2024, there have been at least 24 reported crashes at the intersection, according to records by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Last year, only one crash involved injuries. This year, that number jumped to seven.
Video from a crash last month shows the aftermath of a pickup truck that collided with a motorcycle.
Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed the motorcyclist died in that crash.
‘It’s a dangerous intersection’
Trey Golden owns a warehouse near the intersection and says he sees wrecks and close calls almost weekly.
“It’s a dangerous intersection,” Golden said. “It just has a caution light.”
Golden said drivers often fail to proceed with caution at the flashing yellow lights.
“When I was growing up, a flashing yellow light meant slow down to 30 miles per hour, but they don’t,” Golden said.
Neighbors in the area also said drivers often mistake the intersection for a four-way stop, although the signs on Firetower Road state that cross traffic does not stop.
Because Highway 242 is state-maintained, KPRC 2 reached out to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to ask if traffic lights could be installed.
Spokesperson Leo Flores sent us the following statement:
“A traffic study conducted at SH 242 and Firetower Road determined that a fully actuated signal is not currently warranted. TxDOTcontinues to monitor area traffic conditions and will conduct new studies in the future if needed. The department reminds drivers to stay alert, follow all traffic laws, and yield the right of way to oncoming traffic when making left turns at this intersection.”
How to report concerns
Drivers can submit traffic complaints or safety concerns directly to TxDOT.
