Wait times at Houston airports have dropped, but will it last? Probably not

Travelers flying out of Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports on Tuesday morning are facing another day of long lines and extended security wait times.

The ongoing government shutdown is affecting TSA staffing nationwide, and Houston is feeling the impact.

At Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH):

  • TSA wait times have exceeded one hour and 15 minutes.
  • Only checkpoints at Terminals A and E are open.
  • United Airlines passengers must check bags at Terminal C and then walk or take the Subway to Terminal E for security screening.

At Hobby Airport (HOU):

  • Wait times are averaging 30 minutes or longer.
  • Fewer security lanes are open.

TSA PreCheck and CLEAR remain available at both airports.

Airport officials are urging travelers to arrive early and allow extra time for security screening.

TSA agents who aren’t being paid during the shutdown have stopped showing up for work, creating additional delays.

Officials say travelers should continue to expect long lines until the government shutdown is resolved.

On Monday, the Houston Airport sent the following message:

“We sincerely thank our passengers for their patience and flexibility. The federal government shutdown has impacted TSA staffing and operations nationwide. Houston Airports is doing everything possible to support our TSA partners,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “Our employees immediately stepped up to assist passengers, providing calm and direction in a challenging situation. We’re incredibly proud of their commitment to service and teamwork. We ask that passengers continue to arrive early and expect extended security wait times until the federal government shutdown is resolved.”
