Houstonians in the Montrose neighborhood are not backing down. One day after crews removed the rainbow crosswalk located at the intersection of Westheimer and Taft, residents were spotted with their chalk and paint.

Overnight into Tuesday morning, KPRC 2 cameras caught several Houstonians in the Montrose neighborhood painting rainbows and writing messages on the sidewalk where the rainbow crosswalk once stood.

This comes after at least four people were arrested while attempting to stop crews from removing the crosswalk in accordance with Gov. Greg Abbott’s most recent order that directs cities across Texas to remove “distracting road features.”

Our cameras were also in attendance on Monday when dozens of protesters gathered at the same intersection to attempt to block the removal, which was ultimately unsuccessful.

Unfortunately, this may just be the first of many other removals across Houston.

KPRC 2 Gage Goulding reported that although a definitive decision hasn’t been made, two murals, a Black Lives Matter mural located in Third Ward and a Black Towns Matter mural located in Independence Heights, are also being threatened.
