Legendary Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell dies at age 97

Jim Lovell, the US astronaut who led the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission to the Moon in 1970, died at the age of 97, NASA announced Friday. Lovell, who was supposed to be the fifth person ever to walk on the surface of the moon, is instead credited with creating one of NASA’s finest moments of survival and cool-headed ingenuity after an explosion interrupted their descent to the lunar surface.
